Can I Use Freshly Cut Firewood in My Fireplace?

Firewood should be seasoned, meaning it should have time to dry up a bit, Fresh cut has too much moisture in it to burn properly. Firewood should have no more than 20% moisture content. Otherwise, it will smoke, causing harmful chemicals to come into your home and can cause creosote to build up in the chimney and fireplace. To tell if your firewood is dry enough you can bang two logs together, if there is a hollow sound or, if the ends of the logs are dark in color and have cracks, it should be dry enough. If you have logs to compare to each other, dry firewood will weigh less than wet wood.
